A.J. Meerwald
The Bayshore Center at Bivalve
The A. J. Meerwald is a Delaware Bay oyster schooner, a distinct vessel that evolved to meet the needs of the local oyster fishery. Launched in 1928, the A. J. Meerwald was one of hundreds of schooners built along South Jersey's Delaware Bayshore before the decline of the shipbuilding industry that coincided with the Great Depression. See their website for more information.
I was looking forward to this sail all summer. Just happened that a dear friend passed and her service was the same day. I think she was okay with me choosing the sail over her service. It was a gray morning and by the time we set sail, the light was amazing! It was a very windy day and they could only have all the sails raised a short time, but long enough for me to get the shots I needed.
Every detail was of interest, from how the sail folds, to all the ropes. I have a sail maker in my family, Ed Cobb, so I paid special attention to the details. Now I go sailing as often as I can. Love it!
